An Open Source webOS

Posted by Dion Almaer about a year ago on open_source webos

webOS has been open sourced.

Of course, the details are important here:

  • What parts of webOS? It goes from very low level embedded schtuff all the way to libraries (Enyo) to images and assets
  • What open source license? I have heard that they are looking at Apache2 for Enyo, which is perfect (handles the patent side as well as pure IP rights), but what about the other bits
  • How will it be governed? What does “Good, transparent and inclusive governance to avoid fragmentation” really mean

At the end of the day, can I build an Enyo app and wrap it up and put it in the various app stores? (iTunes, Android market, etc)

Can folks on the Android side take any of the code++ and enhance their world?

What can the PhoneGap guys do with this? Facebook? Can we use it as a basis for a WebKit Runtime?

A lot to talk about, and a lot to learn from HP.

I wanted us to open source a bunch of webOS back when I was there. I wish we could have done so early on, from a position of strength…. but hey, this will be a bit of a ride! And, if it can keep some of the great engineers engaged that is a win (as is bringing webos-internals into the fold!)
